Colorado holds the 8th position in the United States for proven oil reserves at 1.56 billion barrels as of 2019. The Green River Shale Formation in Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado are estimated to hold more than half of global oil shale reserves.
In 2020, Colorado oil production was 171.5 million barrels with 138 million barrels (80.7%) from 29 oil-producing regions in Weld County.
The Wattenberg Gas Field in the Denver Basin was ranked 9th for largest proven U.S. natural gas reserves and 4th for condensates in 2013 by the Energy Information Administration. The Niobrara Shale Formation is another natural gas producing region with oil production primarily in the North Park Basin.
