The Green River Shale Formation covering parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Western Colorado is estimated to hold 3 trillion barrels making it the largest oil shale deposit in the world. Geological surveys estimate that Colorado Basins may have the potential for 1.5 trillion barrels of recoverable oil from shale deposits using current extraction technologies.
It’s not just oil. According to a 2016 USGS report, the Mancos Shale Formation in the Piceance Basin holds 45 million barrels of condensate and 66.3 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas deposits. The Piceance Basin is described as the national SR&D hub for oil shale extraction technology.
