The Keystone State produced 5.5 million barrels in 2020 ranking 17th in U.S. crude oil production. Pennsylvania oil & gas basins host the Utica, Devonian, and Marcellus Shale Formations. The most productive wells are typically drilled in the northeast and western half of the state.
The 104,000 square mile Marcellus Shale holds the largest natural gas reserves in the nation. Natural gas production had a record-breaking year in 2020 with 7.1 trillion cubic feet from roughly 10,000 unconventional wells, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
