North Dakota currently ranks as the second-largest U.S. oil-producing state due to advances in horizontal drilling technology. The Bakken Shale Formation has maxed out oil production at roughly 500,000 barrels per day due to insufficient pipeline capacity. Production from the Three Forks Shale Formation of ND and Saskatchewan are often included in Bakken production numbers.
The same is true for recoverable O&G reserves. In 2013, USGS estimated combined resources of:
- 7.4 billion barrels of oil
- 6.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas
- 530 million barrels of natural gas condensates
- Servicing western North Dakota
- 12,000 sqft on 10 acres
- Located in the bakken shale formation
